Summer Reading Program for People of All Ages

“Dig Into Reading” This Summer

Kids of all ages love digging in the dirt, which will make this year’s Summer Reading Program at the John L. Street Library extra fun when children dig for dinosaurs, meet burrowing critters and more. And here’s the good news: it’s FREE!

Even better news: it’s not just for the kiddos. This year’s theme, Dig Into Reading, will have children, teens and adults digging up new stories and new challenges. Teens and adults will have the chance to win prizes like MP3 players and a brand new Kindle.

Children 2 to 12 – Wednesdays, July 10-31

For the younger set, children from two to 12 will learn about all kinds of digging – gardening, archeology and paleontology, burrowing animals, mining and more. Each Wednesday in July beginning the 10th, , kids can plant flowers, meet an archeologist and dig for dinosaurs, crawl through a mine shaft and meet creatures from LBL who spend much of their lives underground.

Children are most successful in school when they read during the summer. Those who join the summer reading program keep their brains active and start school in the fall ready to learn and ready to succeed. And the summer reading program at John L. Street Library is a great way for you and your family to read and learn together. From picture books to chapter books, our staff will help you find books that are just right for you.

There will be two programs each Wednesday, 10:30-11:30 a.m. and 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Registration is required. Stop by the library to sign up or call 522-6301.

Teens 13-16 – Saturday, Aug. 3, Hypnotist

The teen summer reading program at John L. Street Library is hypnotic. Digging Beneath the Surface is all about burrowing deeper into the mind, and it’s no ordinary excavation. Hypnotist Darshwood the Conjurer will perform amazing feats of hypnosis on at least one unsuspecting librarian. This comedy show is a free, one-day-only event on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 1-3 pm. Seating is limited. Pre-registration is required.

Teens can expect fun, mind games, food and door prizes, including two grand prizes – MP3 Player-Shuffles. Each attendee gets one entry into the drawing, but because the summer reading program is all about encouraging teens to read, you can earn more chances to win. For every book you read in July, you get an added entry into the door prize drawings. The more you read, the more chances you have to win.

To pre-register, go to the library today or call 522-6301.

Adults – Groundbreaking Reads

Adults will have a chance to win a free Kindle during the John L. Street Library “Groundbreaking Reads” program. Our adult summer reading contest requires participants to dig into the stacks to create a cento, a literary work made up of parts from other works.

Create a poem using book titles from the library, then exhibit your creation by stacking the selected books displaying the spines. Staff-created examples are currently on display. Use your imagination to build a masterpiece of any length.
Library patrons will vote on their favorite entries. One lucky poet will win a Kindle 6” E Ink Display electronic e-reader. Other prizes will be awarded, as well. Only one entry per patron.
Winners will be announced Aug. 1, 2013. For details about the entry deadline, call 522-6301.
