Library notes for 27 February

February is almost over and the weather has been cold and messy, to sit down with a good book at the end of the day is a delight. “Pam’s Pick” this week is a comic masterpiece. “Insane City” by Dave Barry, this book will keep you laughing from beginning to end. This is just what you need to cheer up a dreary day.

 

New Fiction:

“Catching Fireflies” by Sherry Woods, this is book 9 in the Sweet Magnolia series. When a teenager’s life is destroyed by a bully, the Sweet Magnolias bring the town together to ensure that the student’s future isn’t ruined.

 

“The Blood Gospel” by James Rollins & Rebecca Cantrell, this is the first book in the Order of the Sanguines series. This is a gothic tale about an ancient order and the hunt for a miraculous book known only as Blood Gospel. At the end of the book is a warning: some books should never be found, never opened. But now it is too late.

 

“Beautiful Disaster” by Jamie McGuire, this is a romance novel. When good girl Abby goes off to college she meets bad boy Travis. He tricks her in to a simple bet. A bet with big stakes. If Travis loses he must remain abstinent for a month, if Abby loses she must live in his apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, both have met their match.

 

“Another Piece of My Heart” by Jane Green, this is a story that explores the complications of a woman marrying into a ready-made family, and the true meaning of motherhood. When Andi meets Ethan she knows he is the man for her. Divorced with two girls Ethan is a good husband. But his daughters see Andi as an obstacle that threatens everything. Can she gain their trust?

 

“The Wrath of Angels” by John Connolly, this is a Charlie Parker thriller. The wreckage of a plane is discovered with no bodies. No such plane has ever been reported missing. The plane has a list of names who have struck a deal with the devil. Charlie knows more than most about the nature of evil and fears that his own name may be on the list.

 

 

New Christian Fiction:

“Safe in His Arms” by Colleen Coble, this is book two in the Under Texas Stars series. Margaret’s father wants his daughter to have a husband and a family of her own. But she has given up on that dream, until the new foreman comes along. When she overhears a conversation that links him to a gang of bank robbers she is worried. But how could this be true of a man so kind and who talks so convincingly about his faith?

 

“A Most Unsuitable Match” by Stephanie Grace Whitson, this story of two people who find themselves on a steamboat journey that are opposites in every way except in wondering if their path will ever cross again. This book is in Large Print.

 

 

New Mystery:

“The Bughouse Affair” by Marcia Muller and Bill Pronzini, this is a Carpenter and Quincannon mystery. Sabina and her partner John are involved in the hunt for a ruthless pickpocket and a slippery housebreaker. The two cases eventually connect in a surprising way.

 

 

New Biographies:

“The Longest Fight: In the Ring with Joe Gans, Boxing’s first African American Champion” by William Gildea this is the story of Joe Gans. He was the first African American Boxing Champion in 1906.

 

“Open Heart” by Elie Wiesel, this is this reflections of Wiesel’s life, after heart surgery. This is his account of hope and despair, of love, regrets and abiding faith.

 

 

New Non-fiction:

“Because I Said So!” by Ken Jennings, this is the truth behind the myths, tales, and warnings every generation passes down to its kids. True or False Chicken soup is good for a cold?

True, it has been used since the fourth century.

 

“The Future” by Al Gore, this book identifies the six critical drivers of global change.

 

“Never Goin’ Back” by Al Roker, this is his inspiring story of winning the weight-loss battle for good.

 

“The Alzheimer’s Prevention Cookbook” by Marwan Sabbagh, this book will teach you to eat smart to stay sharp.

“The Aviator’s Wife” by Melanie Benjamin, this is the story of the relationship of one of America’s most extraordinary couples: Charles Lindbergh and his wife Anne Morrow Lindbergh.

February is American Heart Month, Black History Month and Sweetheart’s Month, and we have something for all three.  “Pam’s Pick” this week of course would be a little romance. “Until the End of Time” by Danielle Steel, this is the story of two couples, four decades apart. One believes that if lovers die, they find each other again in another life. Or maybe stars side by side in the sky forever.

 

New Fiction:

“Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker” by Jennifer Chiaverini, this is the story of a relationship between two women, First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln and Elizabeth Hobbs Keckley who was born a slave. Elizabeth was a professional dressmaker, who supported the First Lady through years of tragedies.

“If You Were Here” by Jen Lancaster, this is a hilarious novel about a couple and their suburban dream with a do-it-yourself attitude.

“The Fifth Assassin” by Brad Meltzer, this is a political thriller. Beecher White has discovered a killer in Washington, D.C., who is re-creating the crime of four other assassins. Can he stop him from killing the President?

“Private Berlin” by James Patterson, this is a powerful international suspense novel. Chris Schneider of the Private headquarters in German is missing and it is up to Mattie Engel one of the top agents to find him.  Also in large print.

“The Girl on the Cliff” by Lucinda Riley, this is the story of two Irish families entangled by a tragic past that seems to repeat itself.

February is the best month to curl up on the couch with a good book. “Pam’s Pick” this week is a very good book. “Collateral Damage” by Stuart Woods, this is a Stone Barrington novel. Stone follows the trail of a killer and learns just how far some people will go to wreak vengeance.

 

New Fiction:

“Robert B. Parker’s Ironhorse” by Robert Knott, this is a Virgil Cole novel. Cole and Hitch on their first assignment as territorial marshals, are to escort Mexican prisoners to the border by train. When the governor of Texas and family get on the train matters change. They soon find themselves in the midst of a gang of outlaws. Can they save everyone and keep their prisoners?

 

“Collateral” by Ellen Hopkins, this is the story of a young woman torn between passionate first love and the reality of war. Ashley never thought she would be a military wife. But when she met Cole he didn’t match the stereotype of a solider. After five years and four deployments, Ashley wonders what life might be like outside the shadow of war.

 

“Luck of the Draw” by Piers Anthony this is a new escapade in the Chronicles of Xanth. Bryce is at the end of a long life when he discovers a magical box in his garage. The children’s department, in keeping with the New Year’s resolution, Resolve to Read More, has kicked off a new program called: 1000 BOOKS BEFORE KINDERGARTEN. It is one way to involve the whole family in a child’s readiness to read and promote early literacy. There are numerous studies proving the beneficial effects of early literacy and reading to children before they enter school. I hope this is the happiest year for everyone. One way to make your year happier is with a good book or two or four. “Pam’s Pick” this week is “Shiver” by Karen Robards, this is a romantic suspense thriller. When Samantha swore off love, he was the last man she imagined would steal her heart.

 

New Fiction:
“The Twelve Trives of Hattie” by Ayana Mathis, this is an Oprah Book Club pick. This is the story of the children of the Great Migration, a story of love and bitterness and the promise of a new America.

 

“The First Prophet” by Kay Hooper, this is the first book in the new Bishop Files novels. Sarah woke from a coma with psychic abilities she couldn’t control. When her house is destroyed by fire she soon learns she can trust no one. Who is out to get her and why?

 

“Running Wild” by Linda Howard and Linda Jones, this is the first book in the Men from Battle Ridge series. This is the story of a cowboy and a woman on the run. They soon take a stand and fight for love.

 

“Threat Vector” by Tom Clancy with Mark Greaney, this is a thriller that will have you turning pages and turning in your sleep. A secret organization known as the Campus fights against America’s enemies. The Campus has been discovered and whoever knows it exits knows it can be destroyed. The members may not even have a chance to enter the battle before the world is consumed by war.

“Pam’s fiction Pick” of the week is: “The Giving Quilt” by Jennifer Chiaverini, this is an Elm Creek Quilts novel. Library notes for 7 November

November 11th is Veterans Day, a day we should all hold very dear to our hearts. I have many Veterans in my family, my Dad, most of my uncles, a lot of cousins, and my son, Preston. I am very proud of them all! Again this year we will have a Veterans Day display up all month. We will be glad to add any Veteran or Active Duty pictures to our display.

 

“Pam’s Picks” this week, you may have guessed, are for our Veterans and Active Duty Military. “Operation: Military Resources” by Kimberly Suchek, is a book full of resources for all branches of military and their families. This book was donated to the library by The Cadiz-Trigg County VFW Ladies Auxiliary. We thank them so much for this wonderful donation.

 

“Hell in the Pacific” by Jim McEmery with Bill Sloan, this is a marine rifleman’s journey from Guadalcanal to Peleliu.

 

“Viper Pilot” by U.S. Air Force Fighter Pilot Dan Hampton, this book is a memoir of air combat, and
